Essiac Herbal Tea for Cancers

The term "essiac" in Essiac herbal tea is a common local name for an herbal tea discovered by Rene Caisse, a Canadian nurse. Essiac is actually her last name spelled backwards. Rene Caisse discovered this herbal combination in 1920. She met a woman who had been cured of breast cancer by using an herbal combination recommended to her by an Indian medicine man. This combination of herbs was originally used by Ojibwa Natives in Canada. Rene Caisse and her friend Mary McPherson used this tea to treat cancer patients for many years, and are reported to have had remarkable success. They ran a clinic in Bracebridge, Ontario for 8 years, in which she treated cancer patients with this special herbal tea blend. Rene Caisse petitioned the Canadian government to legalize essiac tea for use in treating cancer patients. Unfortunately, the Canadian government did not legalize essiac tea. When treated in some cases, the cancer disappeared altogether when the patient was given essiac herbal tea. In other cases, the symptoms of cancer, including pain, were greatly reduced when the patient was given essiac tea.

Essiac Herbal Tea for Cancer: The Herbs

The formula for the Essiac herbal tea was originally used for cancer, it contained eight herbs but Rene refined it to just four herbs. The herbs contained in Essiac herbal tea are Burdock root (Arctium lappa), Sheep sorrel (Rumex acetosella), Slippery Elm bark (Ulmus fulva), and Turkish rhubarb (Rheum palmatum).

  • Burdock Root (Arctium lappa). The roots of the Burdock plant are usually harvested for folk medicinal use and have gained much attention after the success of the Essiac herbal tea formula for cancer. Using any of these types of supplements might cause high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, or diabetes. Burdock root was originally used to purify the blood of toxins, treat arthritis by reducing inflammation, and as a soothing remedy for skin problems. It is also used as a diuretic, that is, a substance that removes excess water from the body. They contain vitamins B complex and E and trace minerals, including potassium, phosphorous, chromium, cobalt, iron, magnesium, silicon, zinc, and sodium.
  • Sheep Sorrel (Rumex acetosella). It is high in vitamins A, B complex, C, D, K, and E. Aside from that, it also contains minerals like calcium, iron, silicon, magnesium, sulphur, zinc, manganese, iodine, and copper. For a long time, this plant has been used as a folk remedy for cancer in both Europe and Asia, and more recently (with the release of the Essiac herbal tea formula for cancer) in North America. It has been used as a cure for many ailments by the Sheep Sorrel has been used as a treatment for edema (excess water usually in the feet and hands), inflammation, fevers and scurvy. Sheep sorrel is famous for its antioxidant and detoxification properties. Native Americas and Canadians have used sheep sorrel as a cure for centuries. Sheep sorrel is both strengthening and nourishing. It has an astringent and a diuretic property that can break down tumours and alleviate some chronic conditions and degenerative diseases, such as cancer.
  • Slippery Elm (Ulmus fulva). Native Americans used slippery elm to treat inflammation, coughs and as an eye wash. The bark of the slippery elm has been used by many herbalists as a nutritious drink and is said to heal and soothe various discomforts, such as coughs and sore throats. There are no known side effects to using Slippery Elm, though people can still be allergic to it. It also is used to treat skin and mucous membrane irritations and infections. Slippery Elm is known to have an antibiotic and anti-microbial effect as well as the ability to remove toxins from the body. It is used as a detoxifying ingredient in Essiac herbal tea for cancer.
  • Turkey Rhubarb (Rheum palmatum). Turkey rhubarb has been used in Chinese medicine for at least 2,000 years. It is primarily used as a powerful colon cleanser and laxative. The active ingredient of the Turkey rhubarb is the root which contains vitamin A, many of the B complex, C, and E. It also contains calcium, chlorine, copper, iodine, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorous, potassium, silicon, sodium, sulphur, and zinc. Rene Caisse used this in the Essiac herbal tea for cancer as opposed to the common rhubarb for the reason that it is much more effective and tastes less bitter. The rhubarb root is a gentle laxative that stimulates the bodily organs to expel their waste matter, thus purging the body of many toxins that are frequently the cause of tumour-forming cells.

People who believe that Essiac tea cures cancer believe that the tea has several healing properties. Essiac tea is said to enhance the immune system, helps the person feel better in general, shrinks tumours, extends life expectancy, repairs cells, and cleanses the body of impurities and toxins. Because of these healing characteristics, Essiac tea is also used to treat auto immune system diseases such as AIDS, digestive problems, and cancer. Originally, it was believed that Essiac tea shrunk cancerous tissues to the point where they could be discharged from the body. Science has not found this to be true, but anecdotal comments support the concept that Essiac tea heals the body and shrinks or removes tumours. It appears that the ingredients of Essiac tea are harmless at the very least, and have been used in herbal medicine safely for a long time.
